There’s nothing more “old luxury” than a brand that follows the rules—at the expense of the guest.
Like the time I had an upgrade waiting, the room was literally available, and Bonvoy said…
“No.”
Not because it wasn’t possible.
Just because that’s the policy.
Here’s the truth:
Luxury used to mean formality, hierarchy, and stiff rules.
Today? That just feels lazy.
Real luxury today is feeling remembered.
Not recited to. Not filtered through policy.
Just seen. Noticed. Treated like a human.
And the brands that get this?
They’re winning. Not just in the press, but in love. In loyalty.
Examples:
-
The server who notices the chill and brings you a blanket—before you ask.
-
The chef who walks out to explain the memory behind your dish.
-
The hotel that says “yes” because why not—instead of “no” because someone said so in 2015.
Let’s start calling this out.
Want to see what the future of luxury actually looks like?
Good. Let’s talk about it.

Watch this week’s episode of Amanda’s Playbook where I unpack why the future of luxury has nothing to do with marble lobbies and everything to do with vibe.
(Bring snacks. And maybe a hotel robe.)
Now please tell me: What’s a brand that surprised you with that kind of emotional generosity?
Or, if you’ve got a Bonvoy-style “luxury misfire” story, I want to hear it. I might feature a few in next week’s episode.
Still waiting on that upgrade,

P.S.
Luxury isn’t the marble in the lobby.
It’s how you feel when you walk out the door.
